One of the most expected medical entrance exams is to be conducted on 17 July 2022. Every candidate’s obvious question is how to utilise this short span for effective preparation. The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test for undergraduate medical courses will aid the candidates in getting admission into their desired medical institutions. Soaring up the competition, this year, around 18.72 lakh candidates have registered for this exam. Keeping in mind the competition and the limited time span, we have curated some key steps to crack this exam.
It is important to understand the exam syllabus and pattern before moving to the preparation plan. The National Testing Agency conducts the NEET exam, and hence, one can expect a high-standard assessment. The exam comprises four subjects – botany, zoology, physics and chemistry. Each subject comprises 50 questions, out of which 45 have to be answered. Thus 180 out of 200 MCQs should be answered. The following are some key points to be remembered about the exam.
- The exam duration is from 2 pm to 5.20 pm (200 minutes). Candidates won’t be allowed inside the exam venue after 1.30 pm.
- Each subject has 2 sections (sections A and B). Section A has 35 compulsory questions, and B has 15 questions, out of which 10 has to be answered.
- Each question carries four marks, and thus it totals 720 marks. Likewise, each incorrect attempt will fetch a -1 mark.
- If a question has multiple correct answers, then all/any of the options will be awarded four marks. No marks will be awarded for unattended questions.
- Most importantly, it is a pen and paper-based exam (offline) to be written on an OMR sheet.
Steps to Boost Your Score
As the exam is nearing, it is advised to follow a strict and customised study plan. Understand and analyse topics from each subject, and the types of questions asked from them. Explore the NEET previous year question paper to get an overview of the difficulty levels. Also, online question banks will help students in this process. The following are some proven techniques to boost the score –
- The study planner must be customised to cater to your requirements. Set a daily planner or weekly planner based on the target you are trying to achieve. Try to incorporate learning tools like explanation videos, audio chapters and online assessments in your planner.
- When it comes to online assessments, choose standardised ones. Make sure you get assessment feedback for those tests. Practice those mock tests during the actual exam timings (2 pm to 5.20 pm). Also, try to take mock tests after completing your weekly or daily goals. This will boost your confidence level.
- Another important thing is time management. Spend a minimum of 8 to 10 hours of focused preparation time on a daily basis. Likewise, it is important to get 8 hours of continuous sleep. Even while attempting online mock tests, stick on to the time duration. Do not make the mistake of designing a time-constricted schedule. Have enough break times in between.
- It is always advisable to have feedback or a mentor to guide you in this preparation process. There are many online as well as offline coaching options available for this exam. Try to have someone experienced enough to assess your progress.
- The exam comprises a vast ocean of topics. Thus, constant revisions are a must to remember the learnt topics and solidify the preparation. Use personal notes along with study materials for your revisions. Revisions can be done either in a chapter-wise or subject-wise manner. The final target is to revise all important topics.
